RESUME ETIQUETTE

Do include the best contact telephone number or numbers on your resume header. Recruiters need the best contact option and you need to be there when the phone rings.

Do not include your employer contact information such as work email and telephone number on your resume.
Even if your current employer knows you are looking because of a downsizing or other reason, the prospective employer or recruiter is unaware. Including such information is unwise for obvious reasons.

Your resume career objective and profile summary must not refer to personal information such as marital status. This cannot be stressed enough as it is still appearing on  resumes of individuals from  cultures where that is acceptable on resumes or individuals who have not had a resume done in decades.

Use positive phrases in your resume when describing work challenges that reflect poorly on your employer's organization. This is critical as it demonstrates your ability to be tactful and work around difficult situations.

Be informed about  what financial or other information from your past job can be included in your resume. This is particularly important for companies that are privately owned. Double check to be sure you can include the information on your resume.

RESUME CONTENT

First impressions count.
You have about 30 seconds to make an impact with your resume introduction. When your resume, lands on the recruiter's desk it's one of hundreds and there's only a small window of opportunity to get him/her interested in learning more about you. This is especially important in today's highly competitive job market.

Include your core competencies on your resume to highlight your unique value.  Do you know how to find your core competencies and how to relate them to the position you are applying for? This is critical in separating you from your competition.

Resume format and style  must be consistent.  Use the same style throughout your resume and be sure to use the correct format for writing numbers. Style is also important for writing cover letters.

How do you use resume keywords?  This is critical in separating you from your competition and you will need to identify which ones are critical for each position you apply for. Do you know what they are for your industry? A professional resume writer will readily identify them and use them effectively for a winning resume.

Write resume accomplishments for impact.
Always use the acronym CAR (Challenge/ Action/Result) and be brief but specific about what you did. Do not assume the reader knows what "millions of dollars" means.
